Client: Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts
This video presents the arts education programs at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Saint Bonaventure University. K-12 educators are the primary audience, so the video was designed to allow teachers, who have participated in the arts programs, to advocate to their colleagues about the benefits of the Quick Center for the Arts’ educational programs.
I worked with the museum staff to determine the most strategic use of their budget. We choose to film only one art program and one live performance and use still photographs from their collection to present other programs. This approach allowed more time to interview teachers, museum staff, and a school principal.
Client: Memorial Art Gallery
This program was the introduction to the Memorial Art Gallery’s exhibit, Monet’s Waterloo Bridge: Vision and Process, that featured eight Waterloo Bridge paintings. The program familiarizes a non-painting audience with Monet’s aesthetic process by showing an artist transform a garden landscape into a painted image and by weaving together a conversation between the artist, a Monet scholar, a painting conservator, and Monet quotes.
The video also introduced elements of three 4k multi-touch interactive programs that I produced for the exhibit: Paint Your Own Monet, Monet’s London, and Look Below the surface.
Client: America: Now & Here
Crossing State Lines: An American Renga was commissioned by America: Now and Here, an organization founded by the artist Eric Fischl to promote conversation about contemporary America through the arts. The renga is a genre of Japanese collaborative poetry in which each poet builds on the words of the preceding poet. The Renga read in this film is based on the book of the same name curated by Bob Holman and Carol Muske-Dukes that features 54 poets in conversation from across the country.
Client: Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
This video was done for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. The Power of Curiosity presents how Robert Rauschenberg’s insatiable curiosity inspired teachers from the LAB school of Washington to make curiosity a core value at the school. As one teacher put it, “curiosity is the teachable moment.” The script was developed in collaboration with Dorothy Dunn.
Client: Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
This video was done for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Teachers Leading Change shows how the LAB School of Washington's annual Power of Arts conference inspires teachers to create change in their schools. The script was developed in collaboration with Dorothy Dunn.
Client: Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
This video was done for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. In Risk is the 4th “R” teachers from the LAB School of Washington, a leader in arts based education, reveal the “risk” in creative learning that is not based on prescribed outcomes. The script was developed in collaboration with Dorothy Dunn.
Client: Wickliffe School District
This program is used as part of a fundraising proposal for the Wickliffe School District’s after school LAB Program (Learn-Achieve-Believe). The program focuses on how the programmatic goals and teaching practices of LAB are contributing to the students' success.
To stimulate the students' interest in the video, I taught a workshop in basic camera, lighting, and interview techniques, and then had students interview fellow students about their experiences in the LAB program.
Client: Philip Johnson Glass House, a National Trust for Historic Preservation site
I produced Architecture & Influence as part of the Philip Johnson Glass House oral history project for use on their web site and in their visitor center. Working with Project Director, Dorothy Dunn, we interviewed Norman Foster, Michael Graves. Charles Gwathmey, Richard Meier, Jaquelin T. Robertson, Richard Rogers, Vincent Scully, and Robert A. M. Stern--individuals for whom Philip Johnson was mentor, sponsor, and friend. The script was developed in collaboration with Dorothy Dunn.
Client: Philip Johnson Glass House, a National Trust for Historic Preservation site
This program celebrates how two icons of modern architecture, the Philip Johnson Glass House and the Mies Van der Rohe Farnsworth House, continue to inspire conversation and debate about architecture and design.
The program was produced in collaboration with Sotheby's, the Philip Johnson Glass House, and the Farnsworth House as part of their Modern Views project to increase awareness about these structures and raise funds for their continued maintenance.
Client: Dorchester County Visitor Center
The Dorchester County: The Heart of Chesapeake Bay Country video is installed in an exhibit at the Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park to promote tourism in the county. I chose to focus the program on the rich sense of people and place that make Dorchester County a unique destination. The program is designed so visitors can begin watching at any point during the playback loop.
Client: The Catskill Watershed Corporation
Of Dreams and Streams was produced to promote Catskill Watershed Corporation programs available to residents in the New York City watershed region and to address public relationship issues. I chose to focus the video on watershed residents who have benefited from CWC programs to convey the positive impact of the organization. The video was co-scripted with Diane Galusha, the CWC Communications and Education Director.
Client: Cleveland School of the Arts
The A Choice of Weapons video documents a schoolwide program at the Cleveland School of the Arts based on Gordon Parks’ book, A Choice of Weapons, which advocates choosing the arts over your fist to resolve conflict.
I conducted a two week artist-in-residency teaching video production and scripting so students could interview fellow students and become invested in the film. Their participation gave me insight into why the A Choice of Weapons school program was successful at reducing violence and creating excellence in the school.
This video sample is part of a longer program. An introduction of student art work opens the video, and the music was composed and performed by CSA students.
